How do factors like culture, ethnicity, gender, & socioeconomic status affect health and illness? How can medical care meet the needs of diverse patient populations? |
These are some of the questions Project HealthViews seeks to answer. Using a mixed-methods approach and bringing together faculty, students, and community partners, we aim to understand how various groups view their own health, what health disparities and barriers they face, and how they experience different types of treatment. In so doing, we hope to inform healthcare policy and contribute to the development and improvement of culturally appropriate, accessible health services.

Project HealthViews is an applied research project investigating understandings, experiences, and perceptions of health and healthcare in a variety of contexts. The first phase of the project is Project HealthViews Colorado, a collaboration between Dr. Whitney Duncan, a psychological and medical anthropologist at the University of Northern Colorado; Salud Family Health Centers, Sunrise Community Health, and University of Northern Colorado students. We started by conducting surveys and focus groups at Salud clinics to help them better understand their patient population and improve the quality of their care as a patient-centered medical home. We expanded the project to also conduct surveys at Sunrise Community Health, and are currently (in 2019) adapting the project to meet clinics' needs.
